Amidst the Stress and Chaos: True Rest in Jesus

The holidays are over. School has started back up. Winter break is finished, and January is already mostly in the books. 2016 is up and running and it’s time to get into our routine. We’ve all got some combination of kids to raise, jobs to work, school to do, or houses to run. (Plus a lot of you probably have some kind of crazy new resolution to lose weight, or exercise or something gross like that.)

Sometimes it seems like I’m running 100mph trying to keep up with life. And I want to stop and take a breather, but I know that if I do, I’m going to get run over and flattened by responsibilities. We all have those days when we’ve got tons to do, and nothing is going how we want, everything is just chaotic, and wow. I would have had more coffee if I’d have known things were headed this direction. If time flies, it must be going the speed of light. You feel me?

If I learned one thing in 2015, it was this: I cannot do everything on my own.

I think a lot of times we get stuck in our routines and responsibilities and we begin to think that we are alone in the fight. We have to do things on our own, we have to pull our own weight, and so often we feel like we’re failing because we can’t do it all. And we’re right. We can’t do it all. And even if we try, eventually we’re just going to fail.

But the cool thing about life with Christ is that we aren’t ever alone. Christ is always in us. He is always working everything out for our good. He works through our strengths, and He prevails through our failures. He is always victorious. Even when our plans fail, even when we don’t accomplish all of our to-do lists, He is still King.

Jesus wants me to give my burdens to Him. Not just some of my burdens. Not just the big ones, not just the little ones. All of them. He wants me to give over my plans, my dreams, my days, my thoughts, my priorities, my everything. Every minute belongs to Him. There is no area of my life that He is not interested in and there is no area that I should not trust Him to lead.

So in 2016, remember this: Whenever you start feeling the stress coming on, ask yourself whether or not you’ve given this area over to Him. Are you trying to do it all on your own, or is it Christ that is working through you? You see, when it’s your own plans, when it’s your own interests that you’re working toward. When you’re trying to do everything on your own, it’s not going to work. You’re going to get stressed out and things are going to be chaotic. We’re all human, and very limited. On our own, we really can’t accomplish much. But through Christ, nothing is impossible. (Phil. 4:13) When we’re working toward His plan, and for His purpose, we aren’t going to be so stressed because His burden is light and His yoke is easy. Sometimes, you just have to relax, close your eyes, and rest in the fact that He’s got the whole world in His hands. Everything is going to be okay because Christ is in control. Just lay it all at His feet.

Come to Me, all you who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take My yoke upon you and learn from Me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For My yoke is easy and My burden is light.” Matthew 11:28-30
